Huawei Technologies Co. said Wednesday its revenue from mobile handsets rose 87% in the first half of this year, as the Chinese technology giant sold more smartphones in higher price ranges.

In the six months ended June 30, Huawei shipped 48.2 million smartphones, up 39% from a year earlier, the company said. While its shipments more than doubled in China, the company also recorded robust growth in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

In Europe, Huawei focused on selling higher-priced flagship smartphones, and sales were particularly strong in Italy and Spain, the company said.

Huawei, whose main business is providing telecommunications carriers with networking equipment like routers and switches, has been growing rapidly as one of the world’s largest vendors of smartphones.

Huawei said its handset revenue rose to $7.23 billion in the first half. Revenue for its consumer business group, which consists mostly of smartphones, rose 69% to $9.09 billion.
