Koenig said technology spending comparisons were “challenged” by a strong USA dollar and prices dropping on market mainstays such as smartphones and tablets. Sales of wearables, including smartwatches and fitness trackers, are expected to grow about 59 percent this year to 25 billion dollars.

Spending on personal tech gadgets is taking a hit from the economic slowdown in China and the strong USA dollar, researchers from the Consumer Technology Association said on Monday (Jan 4). As 2016 begins, corporations, industries and market research experts are releasing their projections for the upcoming year, and so far, things are looking good for the technology sector. “That’s where the growth is, where the industry’s growing”. A rise in sales of 2-in-1 computers, those including convertible laptops and detachable tablets, will drive the expected 48% growth to 11.7 million units sold in 2016, about $8 billion in revenue. After significant growth and wide adoption over the past five years, tablet sales will continue to decline in 2016. Tablet unit sales are forecast to reach 60 million this year, a nine percent decrease from 2015. CTA projects revenues will reach $19 billion for all TV sets and displays in 2016, on par with 2015, as volumes drop one percent to just under 40 million units. The shipments of laptops are expected to post a growth of 2% to 27.6 million units. Expect to become very familiar with virtual reality in the upcoming year; CTA predicts explosive growth for the industry with a projected 440% increase in revenue over 2015.

When cellular computer systems resembling laptops are included with smartphones and tablets, the share of gross sales within the yr was predicted to be fifty eight % or some $ 551 billion.

Revenue from sales of drones will reach $953 million, which is more than double that of previous year. 3D printer sales are projected to increase by 64%, with an estimated 178 million printers being sold in the United States.

Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at CTA was quoted by FT as saying: “We are at a really interesting inflection point for the consumer tech industry”. “Digitization is rapidly changing the landscape of our daily lives, and consumers are clearly choosing to infuse tech in all facets of their lives”.

Numerous factors are weighing on the tech market, Koenig said. I don’t have the answers as to where search marketers will put budgets this year to reach consumers, but here are a few stats to help you determine the best strategy.

Consumer Technology Association (CTA)TM, formerly Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, is the trade association representing the $287 billion US consumer technology industry. CTA also owns and produces CES® – the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technology.
