Air Shield Dam - Steel Shield and Airbag Barrier for Water Control and Flood Protection
The air shield dam is a water-control barrier made of rigid steel shield panels driven by high-strength airbags. The panels are hinged to a concrete base slab, and the airbags sit underneath them. When air is pumped in, the airbags push the shield upward to hold back the river and lift the upstream water level. When the air is released, the shield lowers and lies flat on the slab, so floodwater passes through freely.
Main Advantages:
Longer airbag life: The airbags are covered by the steel shield, away from sunlight, floating debris, and ice
Solid and steady: The rigid steel panels stay stable against water pressure, wind, and waves
Easy height control: Raise or lower the shield by adding or releasing air
Quick and convenient operation: Fast movement, with manual, remote, or automatic control available
Good for wide channels: Multiple sections can be joined to cover long spans
Simple maintenance: No heavy hoists or complicated mechanical parts
Clear flood passage: The lowered shield lies flat and keeps the channel open
Clean appearance: Simple structure with little effect on the river channel
Typical Uses:
Irrigation and water conservancy projects, hydropower stations, flood control, river and city landscape water features, water storage and diversion, tidal barriers, and seawater intrusion prevention.
